Chapter Seventeen

I woke the next morning and realized how quiet it was. The wind was no longer blowing. Finally, we were going to get out of here. Not that here was bad, it just wasn’t home. I looked over to see Maggie’s bed empty, and I could hear the shower running. After a second, I noticed my little Pepper wasn’t at the end of the bed. She was usually down by my feet. Where was she? The curtains swayed and a moment later I saw her little tail swishing side to side. I joined her at the window and confirmed in fact the snow had stopped falling. That thought was closely followed by the realization that I’d never seen so much snow in my whole life. Maggie and I got ready and went to get breakfast. There seemed to be an air of relief and excitement in the hotel that morning. Everyone seemed cheerier now that the wind had actually stopped blowing. When we got to the lobby, I noticed a crowd of people standing around. Detective Mason and Mr. Horner had their attention.

Detective Mason held his hands up and addressed the crowd. “I know you want to leave, but you need to stay put for now. Yes, it looks like the blizzard is over, but now we have to wait for the snowplows to get their work done. They will start with the main roads first, then they’ll get to the side streets and neighborhoods. We’ll keep you updated, but for now, you just need to stay put. Right now, you wouldn’t even make it out of the parking garage. I promise you the city will be working as quickly as they can to get you back home or get you back on the road.”

I could hear grumbling from some as they turned away.

We turned to walk toward the dining room. “I’m not sure what they are complaining about.” I said, “Shoot, I’m just glad it’s over. That wind had been grating on my nerves. It just kept going and going. But it’s over. We’re almost out of here.” Maggie was nodding and listening.

“You’re not saying much,” I said, giving her a puzzled look.

She seemed pretty hesitant to say anything. “Just don’t start packing just yet, that’s all.”

“Oh? Why not? It’s over.”

“Emily, what size is Copper Ridge?”

“Small, but what’s that got to do with anything?”

The next time she spoke her voice was a little quieter, barely above a whisper. “And how many snow plows do you think we have?”

“Oh!” The light was dawning.

“Yeah, think you got it now. It can be a bit of a slow process when you stop and think of all the roads even here. With the amount of snow we’ve had, once the roads are plowed, you still won’t be able to get to your door or driveway.”

I stood there thinking to myself. “Do you know I don’t even have a snow shovel? How could I have not thought of that?”

“It’s okay, you can borrow my shovel and you’ll get used to winter here.
